Paper Dolls

An outfit builder inspired by paper dolls from vintage magazines and newspapers.

The Idea

  • The traditional English heritage brand of Childrensalon reminded me of vintage paper dolls that my mother used to collect.

  • I decided to make a digital version so users could make their own avatars based on their children.

  • Users could try different outfit combinations organically or we would suggest recommendations based on their avatars and shopping history.

The Process

  • I collected a list of style recommendations from the in-house style team, and several online personal stylist resources.

  • A low-fi wireframe of how the interface would work. Including; avatar generation, sizing guide, preferred brands, and item selection.

  • Image assets were readily available to us as all product images were shot in-house in white or grey backgrounds and touched up by studio staff. So transparent PNG files could easily be created for layered interactions.

The Objective

  • The avatar generation meant users would have to create an account to save it for recommendations resulting in an increase of return customers.

  • Improved engagement with parents and their children. The experience was designed to be fun as well as useful, so users of all ages could play with it and build a positive delighter association with the brand.

  • A lot of users (especially the Dads) would request styling advice from customer service assistants.
This feature would allow users to generate outfits based on rules of compatibility and rule out clashing items.

  • Suitable outfit ideas should reduce the number of incoming returns if users got to see how they looked before purchase.
